Fires can be devastating, causing immense damage to homes and posing significant risks to occupants. At SERVPRO® of North Pensacola, we understand the importance of fire prevention and preparedness. Here are some common causes of fires and steps you can take to safeguard your home:

  1. Kitchen Mishaps: Cooking-related fires are a leading cause of home fires. Ensure you never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and have a fire extinguisher readily available.

  2. Electrical Malfunctions: Faulty wiring, overloaded circuits, and damaged electrical cords can spark fires. Have a professional electrician inspect your home's electrical system regularly, and avoid overloading outlets with too many appliances.

  3. Heating Equipment: Improper use of heating sources, such as space heaters or fireplaces, can lead to fires. Keep flammable materials away from heat sources, and never leave heaters unattended.

  4. Smoking: Smoking indoors increases the risk of accidental fires. Encourage smoking outdoors, and ensure cigarette butts are properly extinguished in designated containers.

  5. Candles: While candles add ambiance, they also pose fire hazards. Always keep candles away from flammable materials, and never leave them burning unattended.

  6. Children and Matches: Teach children about fire safety and keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

  7. Flammable Materials: Store flammable liquids, such as gasoline and paint, in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources.

Taking proactive measures to prevent fires can significantly reduce the risk of devastating property damage and protect your loved ones. If a fire does occur, remember that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is here to help with professional fire damage restoration services. Stay safe and prepared!

A small flame can turn into a large fire in a matter of minutes. Lives are more important than objects, so get yourself and others out of danger.

SERVPRO of Downtown and North Pensacola Offers these Tips for Escape:

Reduce the Risk of DRYER FIRES!

7/27/2022 (Permalink)

Dryer that has caught on fire with SERVPRO logo Dryer Fire? SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help!

Preventative maintenance and cleaning are two of the best ways to reduce the risk of a residential structure fire, and this is especially true in the case of clothing dryers.  The US Fire Administration reports than an average of 2,900 dryer fires occur each year, amounting in nearly $35 million worth of property damage loss, and that failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of these fires.  Keep yourself, loved ones, and your property safe by following these tips on clothing dryer maintenance:

  • Make sure that you dryer is installed according to manufacturer specifications. Improper wiring can cause an electrical fire.  Along with proper installation, it is imperative to make sure your dryer is properly powered.
  • Clean out the lint filter after each cycle. This allows the proper air flow through the machine, and the removal of the lint limits the amount of material available to burn if a fire did start.
  • Periodically check the vent system leading out of the dryer. Make sure this venting is not cracked, restricted, or blocked.
  • Do not put materials into the clothing dryer that are not rated for this type of drying.
  • Clean out lint buildup behind, around, and underneath the dryer.
  • Do not leave your dryer running unattended.

In the unfortunate event that a dryer, other appliance, or other malfunction causes a fire at your home, know that the professionally trained team at SERVPRO of North Pensacola is equipped and prepared to help.  Serving communities throughout Northwest Florida, we have the training, experience, and expertise to handle fire damages of all shapes and sizes.  To learn more about our services, request assistance, or for any other property damage issues, don’t hesitate to call: 850-466-3076.  SERVPRO of North Pensacola – “We’re faster to any size disaster!”

Celebrating Memorial Day with Fireworks? Do it Safely!

5/18/2022 (Permalink)

Fireworks on a night sky with SERVPRO logo in front Enjoy the Fireworks...but do it safely!

Memorial Day Weekend is a time for family gatherings, outdoor barbecues, playing in the pool, and enjoying fireworks as night falls.  When enjoying these festivities, though, it is important to keep safety, especially FIRE SAFETY, in mind.  Protecting yourself, family, friends, and property from danger and disaster when it comes to fireworks can be achieved by practicing the following guidelines:

  • Always follow the manufacturers instructions, guidelines, and recommendations on the firework packaging. Improper use of fireworks can result in explosions, severe burns, and/or property damage.
  • Do not allow children to use fireworks unattended. Firework ignition should be supervised by a responsible adult and children and pets should not be allowed to get too close to lit fireworks.
  • Be sure to light fireworks in an open area, free of buildings, structures, and foliage. Creating a “barrier” of empty space around the firework area can reduce accidental fire spread.
  • Make sure fireworks are completely extinguished before discarding. This may include allowing them to sit for an extended time before putting into the trash or soaking in a bucket of water before throwing out.  It is a good practice to have both a fire extinguisher and water source, such as a hose, readily available while using fireworks.
  • Only ignite one firework at a time. Having multiple fireworks going in a small area can increase the risk of things getting out of control and something in the surrounding area catching fire.

Even with the best safety practices and measures in place, accidents can still happen.  If fireworks, or any other fire source, causes damage to your home or business this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, call SERVPRO of North Pensacola for help.  Our team is available 24/7 for emergencies and takes great pride in providing the highest possible level of customer service when disaster strikes.  To learn more about our fire services, or request assistance, give us a call: 850-466-3076.

Christmas Tree decorated in SERVPRO colors with SERVPRO logo Stay safe as your decorate for the holidays!

The joy of the Christmas Season can quickly diminish into stress and worry with the addition of a structure fire.  Especially while decorating for the holidays, it is important to always consider fire safety first and foremost.  The National Fire Protection Association offers many tips to follow while decorating and celebrating the season, helping to prevent yourself, loved ones, or property from experiencing a holiday fire disaster.

Christmas Trees:

  • If decorating with a live tree, be sure to select one that is fresh, with green needles that do not easily fall off when touched.
  • Place the Christmas tree at least three feet away from any heat or flame source, such as fireplaces, space heaters, or candles.
  • Water your tree daily; the dryer your tree becomes the more likely it is to catch fire.
  • Do not use light strands that are broken, frayed, or otherwise damaged. Only use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Always turn off your Christmas tree lights before leaving your home or going to bed.

Outdoor Decorations:

  • When hanging lights, be sure to only use strands that are rated for outdoor use. Use clips, not nails, or staples, to hang you lights to so that cords do not get damaged.
  • Do not block any emergency exits, doors, or windows with decorations.
  • Do not overload power supplies with decorations, and always turn off or unplug decorations when you leave your home.
  • Bring outdoor lights inside after the holidays to remove hazards, as well as make your lights last longer.

Holiday Entertaining:

  • Test your smoke alarms before hosting a holiday party.
  • Keep children and pets away from lit candles. Keep lit candles away from draperies, furniture, or other flammable materials.
  • While cooking on the stovetop, stay in the kitchen; keep children and pets out of the kitchen while the stovetop is in use.
  • Do not leave fireplaces, space heaters, or other heat sources running unattended.

Let’s Talk Turkey! (Safety)

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Turkey in a pan Stay safe this Thanksgiving by practicing fire safety while cooking!

Thanksgiving is packed with a variety of traditions: Spending time with loved ones, watching football, and having a delicious meal of cranberry sauce, stuffing, and most importantly, turkey!  This joyous time of year provides the opportunity to create many memories, however it also ushers in a rise in property damages from fire.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S fire departments responded to an estimated 1,400 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving in 2019, the peak day for such fires.  So, when preparing your Thanksgiving meal, make sure to keep yourself and your property safe by following the below precautions:

  • Do not leave items unattended while cooking on the stovetop. Watch for pots to bubble over and reduce heat as necessary.
  • Keep children and pets out of the kitchen while cooking your Thanksgiving meal. This reduces the risk of items being knocked off the stovetop, or oven knobs being adjusted unintentionally.
  • If frying your turkey, ensure that the bird is completely thawed before placing into hot grease. Keep your turkey fryer a safe distance from any structures, foliage, or furniture when in use.
  • Make sure all your smoke alarms are in working order. They can be checked by pushing the “test” button.
  • Do not leave towels, oven mitts, or other flammable materials near the stovetop while in use.
  • Make sure to have an in-date fire extinguisher available in your kitchen in case a fire does occur.

In the unfortunate event that your home does suffer fire damages this Thanksgiving, trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola to help.  Our team of professional cleanup and restoration technicians has a variety of training and experience to help make your damage “Like it never even happened.”  To learn more or request service, please give us a call at 850-466-3076.  We wish you a Happy (and safe) Thanksgiving!

Residential Structure Fires: What are the Leading Causes?

10/14/2021 (Permalink)

Paper House on Fire on Black Background Fire Damages? Give us a call at 850-466-3076!

The smell of smoke, the flickering of flames, or the sounds of sirens…

These are some of the last things a homeowner wants to experience.  Structure fires can be extremely dangerous, costly, and stressful: because of this, knowing the most common causes of these fires, and being able to perform routine maintenance to reduce their likelihood is imperative for members of the community.

So, what are the most common causes of residential structure fires?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the five most common causes of residential structure fires are Cooking, Heating, Electrical, Smoking, and Candles.

  • Cooking: Help prevent cooking fires by never leaving foods in the oven or on the stove unattended. Always be sure to keep cloth and paper goods (such as paper towels) a safe distance away from cooking surfaces.  Supervise children in the kitchen, never allowing them to cook alone.
  • Heating: When using a space heater for warmth, make sure to keep all flammable materials at least three feet away from the unit. If using a wood burning fireplace, have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional at least once a year.
  • Electrical: Regularly check your electrical equipment cords for frays or breaks. If you have breakers pop frequently, have your system inspected by a professional.  Follow manufacturer’s directions on installation of all appliances.
  • Smoking: If you smoke, consider smoking outside of your home rather than inside. Keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children, and make sure cigarettes or pipes are fully extinguished after use.
  • Candles: Make sure candles are fully extinguished after use. Do not place in an area where they can be easily knocked over.  Keep all paper and cloth materials away from burning candles.

Sometimes, even with the best practices and maintenance in place, fires still happen.  Know that when fire damages occur, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help.  Serving the communities of Molino, Ferry Pass, Cottage Hill, and surrounding areas, our team of highly trained professionals is “Faster to Any Size Disaster!”

Fire Safety Equipment

7/30/2021 (Permalink)

Battery being changed in a smoke alarm One of the best pieces of equipment to protect yourself from a fire emergency is a smoke alarm!

There are a multitude of devices and technologies that, depending on the size and type of your structure, can be utilized to help protect your property in a fire emergency.  Preparation and prevention are two of the best methods you can practice, keeping both yourself and your building safe from fire damage.  Although many of these are well-known, there are also some other less commonly recognized devices or technologies that may be beneficial to you and your structure:

  • Smoke Alarms – The National Fire Protection Association recommends that the minimum number of smoke alarms that one should install within their home is:
    • One inside of every sleeping (bed) room
    • One outside of each sleeping (bed) area
    • At least one on every level of the home (including the basement)

Furthermore, these your smoke alarms should be tested regularly, and batteries should be replaced at least twice per year.

  • Fire Extinguishers – There are a multitude of different types of fire extinguishers that can be utilized, depending on the purpose and contents of the structure. For a more detailed explanation of fire extinguisher types and uses, please visit our blog, “Did You Know? – The Fire Extinguisher Edition”
  • Fire Sprinklers / Suppression Systems – In larger structures, commercial buildings, and many apartment or condominium complexes, fire sprinklers and/or suppression systems may be installed. These systems cover a large area, and once activated, produce extensive amounts of water to put out fires and prevent further spread.
  • Escape Ladders, Routes, and Plans – Having an escape plan put together, in case of fire, whether in your home or business, and sharing with all people regularly within the building, can provide a much safer outcome during a fire emergency. Plans may need to include emergency exit locations, escape equipment (such as ladders), and meeting locations once exiting the building.

Safety is the #1 priority when fire strikes.  After the fire, know that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is prepared and here to help with any flame, smoke, or soot damages your property has sustained.  To learn more about our fire restoration services or schedule an appointment, please give us a call at 850-466-3076.

Did You Know? – The Fire Extinguisher Edition

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

Multiple Fire Extinguishers with Brick Wall in Background Fire Damages? Call SERVPRO of North Pensacola - 850-466-3076!

It is well known that having a working, in-date fire extinguisher on your property is imperative for fire safety preparation.  Many commercial properties require annual fire extinguisher inspections, and that team members receive training on the location of the extinguishers.  Did you know, though, that there are different kinds of fire extinguishers AND that there is a proper way to use this device?  Learn more about these fire extinguisher details below:

Q:  What are the different kinds of fire extinguishers, and what is each used for?

A:  The U.S. Fire Administration defines five primary types of fire extinguishers used to put out different kinds of fires:

  1. A – used for ordinary material fires, such as wood, cloth, or paper.
  2. B – for use with combustible or flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, or oil.
  3. C – for use with electrical equipment like appliances and tools.
  4. D – for use with flammable metals.
  5. K – for use with animal oils, vegetable oils, and fats in cooking appliances.

Many fire extinguishers may also be multipurpose, in that they carry multiple letter definitions and can put out a variety of material fires.  Having the right fire extinguisher for the materials within your structure is very important in limiting the amount of damage sustained, as well as ensuring safety for occupants.

Q:  What is the proper way to use a fire extinguisher?

A: The U.S. Fire Administration suggests the acronym “PASS” as a means of properly discharging a fire extinguisher:

P - Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

A - Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S - Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side

ALWAYS use extreme caution when inside of a fire damaged structure and follow the guidance of local fire authorities.  If your property has suffered fire damages, know that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help.  We offer 24/7 emergency response, and have the training, equipment, and expertise to safely clean and remediate the damages.  To learn more or schedule service, give us a call at 850-466-3076.

Fire Damage Prevention

3/31/2021 (Permalink)

Fire damaged stove and microwave in a residential kitchen. SERVPRO of North Pensacola offers a variety of fire damage restoration services!

When it comes to protecting yourself and your property from fire damages, there are many steps that can be taken.  Some of the more commonly practiced steps include ensuring you have working smoke detectors, checking smoke detector batteries at least twice a year, and keeping functioning fire extinguishers in the home in case of a fire emergency.  Did you know, however, that there are additional steps that can be taken to help PREVENT fires from occurring in the first place?

  • Clean and Maintain Your Clothes Dryer/Dryer Vents: The leading cause of dryer fires, at 34%, is the failure to clean dryer vents. It is a best practice to regularly clean out dryer vents, and to clean the dryer lint filter after each load of laundry is dried, as an abundance of lint in the filter restricts the flow of air to the machine.  You will also want to occasionally check for and, if needed, repair damages to the vent pipes behind the machine.  Finally, make sure your machine is installed using the correct type of electrical plug and outlet per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check Wiring and Electrical Equipment Regularly: Flickering lights, a scorched smell, or frequently blown breakers may all be signs of a wiring issue in your home or business. Contact an electrical professional to address these types of issues.  Along with structural wiring, you should regularly check appliances and electrical equipment for breaks or frays in cords, which provide a fire hazard.
  • Keep Items Away from Hot Surfaces/Open Flames: If burning candles, smoking, or cooking in the home, be sure to keep flammable items, such as draperies, towels, clothing, and cleaning chemicals away from hot surfaces and flames. Fire can spread rapidly once these kinds of items are ignited, making containment and suppression much more difficult.

In the unfortunate event that fire damages do affect your home, know that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help.  Our team has specialized training to handle fire damages, restore contents affected by smoke and soot, and help make your property “Like it never even happened.”  To learn more about our fire remediation services, give us a call at 850-466-3076.

  • Electrical

Smoke Detectors can Save Lives in Cottage Hill

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

By installing a fire alarm in your home, you can lower your risk of being harmed in the event a fire breaks out in your Cottage Hill home.

Fire spreads fast once it is started so SERVPRO of North Pensacola wants to remind you that smoke detectors (smoke alarms) can help save lives in your Cottage Hill home.

An alarm alerts you that danger is present giving you time to get out.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola wants you to remember:

  • Closed doors can slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. That is good for reducing smoke damage and fire damage. That is also why you should have a smoke alarm in every sleeping room in the home
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home
  • Large homes might need extra smoke alarms
  • Some companies make alarms that are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound
  • Do not turn off smoke detectors when cooking
  • Test the smoke alarms at least once a month. There is a test button on the alarm
  • When the alarm sounds, get everyone outside and stay outside
  • Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years

If your Cottage Hill home is not properly protected by a smoke detector, please install one. If you experience a fire, immediately vacate the home and then contact your fire department once you are outside the home.

Difference in Arson and Intentional Fires in Ferry Pass

8/30/2019 (Permalink)

Prevent fires by raising awareness of primary causes.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola wants you to be aware of the causes of fire damage and fire injuries so that you can help prevent them.

Causes of Fires in Ferry Pass:

  • Arson & intentional fires. An “intentional fire” is one that is not set to cause harm, but it gets out of control.  Arson is a fire that is set to cause harm. Most of the time, arson and intentional fires are set outside. Deaths, injuries, and fire damage usually happen indoors
  • Candles
  • Kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fire injuries and home fire damage
  • Use all electrical equipment according to the directions
  • Heating equipment is the second most common cause of death in home fires
  • December, January, and February are the months that have the most home heating fires
  • Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other smoking materials are the biggest cause of fire deaths in the U.S. Think of preventing tragedy when explaining why to quit smoking
  • Children should never be left alone with matches, lighters, candles, or other dangerous materials. Children playing with fire cause hundreds of deaths and injuries every year

Please pay attention to fire safety. While we can help to restore your home or office, prevention and family safety should always come first. Share this blog with a friend who might want to learn more about fire prevention.

Cleaning Smoke and Soot Damage in Quintette

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small kitchen fire can leave a big mess.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola can clean up damage from smoke and soot in your Quintette home.

Smoke is a mixture of gases and small particles. The small particles are also called ash, and they include soot.

Soot is the collection of particles left from incomplete burning of products that contain carbon. These products include wood and coal.

Smoke and soot do not destroy materials the way fire does. They leave behind greasy films and have an unpleasant odor.

Smoke moves from warmer areas to cooler areas. You will find smoke and soot damage on the ceiling above where the fire started, but you will find the damage in other places. SERVPRO of North Pensacola looks for damage in/on:

  • Outside walls and windows: Even if the fire was in the center of the room, smoke travels to the cooler areas
  • Closed-off spaces: Smoke and soot settle in cooler areas, including dresser drawers, closed closets, and wall cavities
  • Air ducts: smoke and soot travel throughout the house
  • Drapes and blinds. The drapes and blinds are cooler than other parts of the house. During a fire, the areas behind the drapes and blinds are cooler than the rest of the room. Remember that smoke travels to the cooler areas, leaving behind smoke and soot.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola investigates these areas to get a good idea of what kind of damage is in the building.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Pensacola will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
