Traveling This Summer? Reduce the Risk of Residential Water Damage!

With school out of session, many families plan and take vacation during the summertime months. Whether taking a cross-country road trip to visit friends, going on a weekend getaway to a destination theme park, or any of the other wonderful activities you enjoy, you will want to make sure your home is safe and secure. Locking doors, setting the alarm, and having a neighbor grab the mail are all common preparations you may make before a trip, but have you considered how to reduce the risk of water damages while you are away? We have some great tips to help you do just that!
Turn off your water before you leave: By turning off your main water valve to your home, you greatly reduce the risk of a water damage caused by a pipe failure or supply line leak.
Clean out your gutters: In case heavy rains take place while you are away, having your gutters cleared will allow the water to freely flow from your roof and away from your property. Conversely, clogged gutters can cause water to back up onto the roof.
Do a “pre-trip” property check: This should include checking the plumbing below all sinks for any leaks, removing any debris from the yard that could cause standing water to not drain away properly, checking for any damage to window or door sills, and making sure all appliance supply lines are secure.
Have someone you trust check on your property: Perhaps that neighbor that is collecting your mail could also pop inside and make sure nothing has happened while you are away. If damage has occurred, the faster it is discovered, the less likely additional issues will arise.
