Decorations Can Be Scary Without Being Dangerous
Have a Happy Halloween and an Awesome October!
“Samhein” is an Irish Gaelic word that is pronounced Sow-ihn. It means “summer’s end” and is celebrated on October 31. The United States celebrates the last day of October by selflessly reducing children’s sugar intakes through candy appropriation.
We often kick off the month of October by decorating everything in black and orange, carving pumpkins into fanciful faces, and claiming that the fur from black cats is a feature of light-colored carpeting, not a bug.
At least that’s how we handle October at SERVPRO® of North Pensacola. We want everyone to have a great October: lots of fun, cute costumes, delightful treats, and no unpleasant surprises. While we are franchise professionals with training and experience remediating homes from fire damage, our deepest wish is for our neighbors to be safe, and to not suffer any losses.
Halloween Fire Safety
The people at the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) enjoy October as much as anyone, but they want all the scares to be intentional and fun, not accidental and destructive. Their most recent Halloween statistics are:
- Decorations were a major factor in an average of 780 homes every year
- 44% of these fires happened because the decorations were too close to candles or hot equipment
- 37% of home decoration fires were started by candles
- 21% of the decoration fires started in the kitchen
- 16% started in the living room
Like the NFPA, we urge safety precautions to prevent harm to Molino residents and to their homes:
- Instead of traditional candles, use battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns
- Keep decorations away from candles or heat sources
- Avoid wearing costumes that have long trails of fabric
- Teach children to stay away from open flames
- Keep decorations away from the exits so people can escape if necessary
- Be sure all smoke alarms are working
